Big storage on the cheap | CNET News.com:
"That means that a Capricorn 1-terabyte system (which consists of 1,000 gigabytes) would sell for about $2,000, while a 1-petabyte system (1,000 terabytes) would cost about $2 million."
BBC NEWS | South Asia | Pakistan 'to receive F-16s soon':
"The US said in March it would resume sales - suspended by an embargo imposed in 1990 over Islamabad's nuclear weapons programme."

I've heard about Pakistan's F-16's since as far as I can remember. I heard things like they have been sitting in the U.S. gathering rust. Lots of good it will do us to finally receive these planes!
Free Markets and Free Culture:

"Dori's DashboardHere at ADHOC, people have comments on the number of widgets I have open on my desktop. I thought I'd share what it looks like and what they all are.
If you click on the image, you should be able to see a larger annotated version. If that doesn't work, let me know.
Enjoy!"

(Via Backup Brain.)

I like to keep my dashboard as sparse as I can make it. I don't like having apps that I barely use or care for taking up memory. Its just the way I am. At one point I had as many apps in my dashboard as in the screenshot, but then I noticed how much memory they were eating up, and of they went.

On the other hand, I'm getting very used to using OS X, and soon might become one of those die hard fans, who can't live without their Apple!
Make printing work better with the Web:
"Orphan Control:

If IE discovers that you are printing a document that gets laid-out on two pages and the second page only covers minimal white-space, we automatically shrink-to-fit the page to fit on only 1 page of paper. Of course, you can manually adjust the scaling rate back if you rather have it printed on 2 pages but we believe that we will save a lot of trees with this feature. :-)"

Sunday Reading for Shadowlines:
"Mind you, there is no walled or fenced border. Just interminable fields with limestone markers where Pakistan ends and further down India begins. Anyways, we went back the next day and threw some Akhbar-e Jahan's over. He wasn't there. I think we just littered India."

Standards and CSS in IE:
"I’m very happy that we’ve shipped IE 7 beta 1. I wanted to make it clear that we know Beta 1 makes little progress for web developers in improving our standards support, particularly in our CSS implementation. I feel badly about this, but we have been focused on how to get the most done overall for IE7, so due to our lead time for locking down beta releases and ramping up our team, we could not get a whole lot done in the platform in beta 1. However, I know this will be better in Beta 2 – and I want to share how we are placing our priorities in IE."

Bink.nu | Microsoft gets outside help for IE 7:
"The company has recruited WholeSecurity, a maker of computer security programs in Austin, Texas, to help Internet Explorer 7, the next version of its browser, identify websites designed to trick people into disclosing personal data to identity thieves, the companies said. These 'phishing' sites mimic legitimate sites, such as eBay and Citibank, and have contributed to a national identity theft epidemic."

Zend Technologies - Design - Mature Design Theory in Web Development:
"Web programmers are often perceived as 'junior developers', or as amateurs. A major reason for this is that, until recently, web applications were written on a smaller scale. As a result, many web projects are still thrown together without proper planning. This used to be considered acceptable, but the growing size and scope of web applications today demands a more mature and robust approach. The time is fast approaching when web applications will match the scale of client-side applications, and inexperienced web developers (and companies) are simply going to be left behind."

Yahoo Update - with sandbox too?

This new yahoo update is frustrating for me.

First because it appears that yahoo is trying to apply sandbox like google, penalising new sites although the sites offer relevant and high quality pages.

Second because instead of being replaced by good pages, the ones that are replacing my good SERPS are pages that are sometimes funny and irrelevant.

I'm posting this from inside IE 7 beta1. I guess the IE7 team has a lot of work ahead of them. I hate the interface, but I suspect this will change in later releases. I assume the real test is of technologies like the phishing dialog box that came up for the first web site I visited. So far though, there's nothing impressive, but I've only just begun. macosxhints - A subtle fix for hard-to-diagnose installer hangs

Its funny to see the difference between the major software and hardware companies these days. For software we have Yahoo, Microsoft and Google, who are doing well, competing and coming up with new products to compete with each other. The consumer wins. On the hardware side, Dell, HP and IBM/Lenova are not doing as well. From what my friends tell me Dell has cut its profit margins very thin on their computers. HP just said it will lay of a lot of people. IBM sold its computer hardware division to Lenova. Consumers are still doing well with the low prices, but for how long?

Just something I've noticed after speaking with friends, and from what I've seen in the news.

To help popularize the widgets, Yahoo plans will give away the Konfabulator software that empowers the applications. Konfabulator had been charging $20 for the software. Anyone who bought version 2.0 of the software since mid-May will be given refunds, said Konfabulator CEO Arlo Rose.

At first I thought that this might not be a smart move, since Apple already bundles Dashboard with OS X Tiger which does similar things. But then I read the article which reminded me that they have a Windows version as well. And that is a good deal. And if they are going to give it away for free, then its a really good deal for the consumers, Konfabulator and Yahoo. I know I'll be downloading the free version to run on my windows machine for sure.

"The Jumbo Jet was so successful, that the Boeing zoomed past the initial demand estimated of 400 planes. By 1993 more than a 1000 were sold. And they continued to sell way into the new century, more recently as cargo carriers. Like the 747, the personal computer was met with scorn, and dismissed as a hobbyist curiosity. It also reshaped the planet, and brought about the further flattening of the planet.

Just like the PC, many thought the IP networks were not going to amount to much. For nearly 25 years, the PC and the Ethernet have helped unleash a wave of innovation. The similarities between the 747, the PC and the IP networking are remarkably similar."

I've decided I'm going to sell my powerbook. It was fun having it, but I find I rarely use it, and its a lot of money to let it go to waste. The last straw was when I was trying to do a voice chat with my Uncle on Yahoo. Wouldn't you know it, the Yahoo software does not support voice chat on the mac. Great! Another example thats fresh in my mind is that none of the tools that Google throughs out to the world have support for the Mac. And I again unsubscribed from world of warcraft, so I dont need a machine for that either.

So its Powerbook G4, 1.33 Ghz, 768 MB of ram, DVD Writer, 60 gig hard drive, and its up for sale. Email me if interested.

Update: There havent been any takers yet. I also started to enjoy working with the machine again, so I might just keep it. Further I realized that the machine is powerful enough to run Windows in Virtual PC. I'll be giving that a shot too.

I had a problem with internet explorer recently, where trying to open a new window, either through Ctrl+N or through a link that opens a new window would cause the same window to refresh and open as a blank window. In effect you could only have one window of internet explorer open at a time.

The most recent piece of software installed was Yahoo Messenger, so I went into Tools -> Internet Options -> Programs -> Manage Addons, and disabled all the Yahoo Addons.

This fixed the problem. At first I had thought that I had a spyware/adware problem, but not so according to Microsofts antispyware program and spybot. Anyway, the problem is all fixed now and things seem back to normal.
