Slackware 9.1 RC1

Take a look at the screen shots. Man GNOME and KDE are getting more pretty by the day. Ofcourse, I'm gonna stick to Windowmaker myself though.

One Writers Retreat

I've always liked to write. Thats why I have this blog. I dont care if people like to read what I write. I just write. Hopefully I'll get better so that one day someone will actually enjoy reading this stuff!

I've never found word processors useful. In fact, when I have to write a paper, I always ask the professor if it can be simple plain ASCII, and so far all of them have said yes. And I am about to graduate! My favorite editor is Emacs and has been for a while. It has all the features that I like, plus its my favorite for coding. The code formatting option (pressing tab on the line) is just something I cant live without while coding.

I also use VI for quick edits. Even though I am not as proficient in VI as in emacs, I am pretty good at it then normal people. Anyway, even on a windows system I have Xemacs VIm installed just because.

Swen Worm
For some reason the Blogger blogthis window gives errors sometimes. Its strange, I wish that Blogger would move to Linux based hosts. It seems from the error messages that they are running Window on the servers. Since Blogger was bought by google I would've thought that they would have ported to Linux by now.
I am beginning some development with the Eclipse IDE.
Lets see where it goes?

Storage Strategies
The google toolbar seems pretty good at blocking web sites. If you are running winblows, and using Internet Eradicator, I recommend the tool!

I dont believe this. Their does'nt seem to be an install for WindowMaker, and xlockmore on my system. Its frustrating. I cant seem to function without WindowMaker, and I usually need to lock my screen before I leave. Its frustrating that two of my favourite and necessary applications are no longer included in a default distribution of RedHat. FRUSTRATING!!!

I downloaded RPMs for WindowMaker from rpmfind. They were RPMs built for Redhat v8. And I am having to compile xlockmore. Stupid. I dont like using KDE/GNOME (the gui), though apps like Konqueror/Gaim are another story. Its too much like Windows. I find I am more productive in WindowMaker. I dont have to use the mouse for anything other than browsing.

Valve, Steam and DRM

First of all, there is no allowance made for playing offline. If you don't have an internet connection then you can't play your game, even if it's a single player game that doesn't neccessarily need an internet connection. That is, until Valve decides to make a version of Steam that will work without a network connection.

Now this by itself wouldn't be too bad. Most gamers have DSL or permanent 56K and wouldn't be too fussed by this. But what happens when the network itself becomes overloaded or worse, goes down?

This is exactly what happened the evening Steam was released. The network was just completely overloaded. If you could start a game you were lucky. If you could update your game data to the most recent version you were luckier still. For the past 18 hours the game has been unplayable despite the fact that every person on Steam has a legally licensed copy of Half-Life or Counterstrike which they paid good money for.

Time flies by, when u're having fun. It seems I started this blog just yesterday. But you can see, months, and months have gone by!
Jon Udell on the recent study done by Forrester research.

The Forrester study is an equation with too many variables. Some of them can be held constant, and I'd like to see that done. For example, the study mentions Zope and PHP but dismisses these as not being serious options for the task at hand -- what Forrester's John Rymer calls "mainstream portal style applications." I wonder what NATO, which has based its worldwide intranet on Zope, will make of that? Note that although you can also run Zope on Windows as well as Linux, hardly anybody (according to Zope Corp.) does.

Of course, Visual Studio.NET is a darned productive environment too. It's a shame we can't make an apples-to-apples comparison. Wait, I've got it! Microsoft just needs to port VS.NET, ASP.NET, and the CLR to Linux. Then we can settle this thing once and for all.

My laptop has started to randomly reboot again. Its a hardware fault. Not much I can do about it. The laptop is old, and hardly any fun.

I saw the demo of Half Life 2 yesterday. It was the full 30 minute video that was shown at E3. It is amazing. I also a trailer of Doom3. Dont know which game is going to be better. But I am sure that these games are not going to be fun playing on my new and upgraded machine. 1.3 Ghz just does'nt seem powerful enough. There was someone in the audience asking if they will have to upgrade thier 486 machines :)

But these new games seem amazing. The kind of detail and physics involved in creating these games is amazing. It would be real fun working on such things! I wanna be a game developer.

GUI vs. CLI: A Qualitative Comparison

I love the command line. I hate using the GUI for anything more than browsing. My file manager is either just the command line, or mc (Midnight Commander) a clone of norton commander. Most of my document creation is also done on the command line, from within emacs. Compiling programs is also done on the command line, because I am just more comfortable using the command line. A habit probably left over from the DOS/Desqview days.
One Big Happy Windows Family?

Microsoft may be able to claim a record number of certified are applications available for its Windows Server 2003 product as of launch day today. But a number of Microsoft's own applications won't be able to support the new server release right away if ever.

One thing is for sure. WarCraft does'nt run on Server 2003!
But that is probably because there are no proper 3D drivers for my video card for Windows Server 2003.
