An example XUL application
On-Demand Contact Center Management - DiscoverDesk.com
This is what a rich web application is all about. Go to products and try the demo. You need a mozilla based browser like firefox.
Ofcourse this gives new meaning to "this web site requires this specific browser" problem that plagued us once when Netscape was still huge, and Internet Explorer was a new browser. Once XAML is out, I can see the beginnings of a new browser war coming up. Or will it be called webapp wars? An important fact is that XUL is here now, while XAML is still far away, 2006 maybe. XUL needs marketting and more developer information. I can barely find any dev information online, and I cant afford to buy a book currently. The more developer information is present on XUL the better. Maybe when 2006 comes XUL will be so common that Microsoft will be forced to support it! No wars that way.

ACM Queue - What Global Sourcing Means for U.S. IT Workers and for the U.S. Economy - The result is likely to be increased IT employment diffused throughout the U.S. economy, especially in non-tech industrial sectors.
For the U.S. economy overall, the widespread use of IT and associated transformation of business activities translates into faster productivity growth. IT accounted for more than half of the acceleration of structural productivity growth in the U.S. in the 1990s, supporting both the robust GDP growth (4%) and low unemployment (3.9%) enjoyed by the U.S. economy in the second half of the decade. This performance was borne out at the sector level, with the sectors with the greatest investment in IT and the greatest number of IT workers also having the greatest productivity growth. Based on price declines from global sourcing, U.S. GDP in 2004 is some $230 billion more than it otherwise would have been, or about $2,000 for each working person in the U.S.
Software and IT services, the second wave of global sourcing. The U.S. is poised for a second wave of IT investment, growth in IT jobs, and productivity growth, as components of software and IT services are produced more cheaply abroad as part of an international value chain. A key source of the gains to capital investment, jobs, and productivity will come from the diffusion of IT into the sectors that did not take up IT during the 1990s.
Now that I am out in the real world, graduated and all, and searching actively for a new job this is certainly good news. However, the trend it seems is towards more Quality Assurance/Assistance type jobs, in the services market. Whats an avid developer searching for a dev job do, in a market that wants to outsource? I guess the good news is that you dont have to be working as a dev to be a dev. I am perfectly happy if I can get a day job that pays my bills so that I can come home and code in the wee hours of the night. The second wave is certainly coming... and this time I have a degree :)

The Shifted Librarian
The Shifted Librarian
This truly is unbelievable, and it makes you wonder why on earth the Secret Service is going around lecturing local law enforcement about wireless "signal theft."
AKMA, please, please, please, go back to the library and talk to the librarians there. I wonder if they even know about this, but I am 100% sure they would love to help verify the law at every level (local, state, and federal). Perhaps they need to start handing out cards that declare their wireless signal open so that there can be no claim of theft.

Lots of good stuff happening.
Mozilla blogthis extension is working again.
OpenVPN v2.0 beta is out, and under testing on my laptop.
Testing out Windows Server 2003, again! Its really boring... but there are somethings I want to be familiar with.
A new release of enlightenment is out, I'm dying to get rid of Server 2003 to install Gentoo and enlightenment. Dont know the time compiling gentoo will be well served though. Too much to learn.
WinXPSP2 has flaws... big surprise!

Jon Udell: Sound bites
Jon Udell: Sound bites
I love sound bites. Jon Udells been promoting the concept for some time. I think that would be next step for blogs. More richer web pages. Wonder who is going to step up and make it easier for all of us bloggers... Maybe instead of just talking open source, Real should be working with the developers to come up with some good software!!!
I 've noticed an increase in talk shows online. Two talk shows I listen to are:
http://www.thelinuxshow.com/
The penguins been busy... always good to know what its up to!
http://www.itconversations.com/series/gillmorgang.html
And one video talk show:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/theshow/
Its always fun to keep tabs on what the evil empire is up to :)
It would be fun to link to parts of these shows, the way Jon does above with Paul Grahams speech at OSCON.
BTW, Jon is part of the Gillmor gang, and Doc Searls is a linux dude and one of the gillmor gang.

After installing SP2 , I wanted to give Internet Explorer a try. But the font settings keep changing. I prefer to use the Text size of smaller on my laptop. However, for some odd reason the web browser keeps switching to Medium. Its really irritating. One major reason to go back to Firefox, amongst thousands.

Hmmm... now I know of two computers that successfully installed SP2 and one that did not. I'm not installing SP2 on any of the computers in the lab though. I have Symantec Firewall, Norton antivirus corporate edition, and spybot with teatimer running on all machines, and have never had a problem with adware/spyware/viruses/worms. I'll upgrade to SP2, very very very slowly on these machines. Too much data, takes time to backup.

CNN.com - Microsoft announces 'XP Lite' in Asia - Aug 11, 2004
The new software's "simplified task management" in which "first-time home PC users can have up to three programs running concurrently" represents a downgrade from the standard XP system. A full XP version can run many more programs concurrently, depending on the amount of memory in a computer.
Other downgrades include "display resolution set to 800x600 maximum and no support for PC-to-PC home networking, sharing printers across a network or more advanced features such as the ability to establish multiple user accounts on a single PC," the company said.
Ummm... who would buy this? Why would they buy this?
First, piracy is so rampant in the targetted areas of this OS that no one would buy this. What is Microsoft thinking?

My friend downloaded WindowsXP SP2 from M$ (dont trust the torrent downloads) and finished installing it. Requires at least 1.2 GB of disk space before install. Its a complete OS upgrade I guess. The system seams more responsive after the install. Also, have no use for most of the features because I already have Anti-Virus and Firewall software, that from what I've heard is much better than what SP2 has to offer.
Oh well, I'm giving Internet Explorer a try again, just to see what kind of changes have been brought in there. Not enough changes though. For instance, you still cant change the size of fonts by actual points, you can choose medium, smaller and so forth, but thats not enough. Want to change the actual sizes myself.
Even though SP2 installed fine on my laptop, it did not on my friends computer. And I was just about ready to go home and go to sleep. :(
And the crash is a hard crash on the first screen... the XP bar just stops moving and the system goes down hard. Same thing with safemode. The system is a P4 2.8 GHz with 512 MB ram, ABit AI7 motherboard, Nvidia Geforce 4200 Ti, Sony DVD Writer, AC97 built in sound, built-in network card, logitech USB wireless keyboard, and logitech PS2 mouse. At the screen to choose whether to go to safe mode, or boot Windows normally, the wireless keyboard would not work, though it worked fine at the BIOS screen. Changing the setting within the BIOS so that the USB Keyboard was handled by the BIOS caused the keyboard to work on that previously mentioned screen, but the system would just hang a lot faster.
The restore did not work, the installation deleted files, copied some files from the CD, and restarted the computer, to start further configuring and stuff, and the system would start, try to start the installation process and then reboot. Hes doing a complete reinstall right now, while I wish I could go home and go to sleep!!!!
Be very careful when installing SP2. You can lose a lot of your sleep time if it does not work with your system.

Its interesting that at the moment, people are not expecting to find a Wifi connection, and praise when they do find one. In the future, maybe five years from now, people will be expecting a Wifi connection, and complaining if they dont find one.
I'm sure its gonna change from the positive side, to the negative pretty soon.
Is that good?

SecurityFocus HOME News: Trojan horse stalks PocketPC
For me this is proof that the belief that the reason Microsoft Windows has the most viruses because it is installed on majority of the computers is wrong. In the PDA world, Pocket PC is not king as Windows is in the PC arena. PalmOS, Linux are some other contenders that also have a hold on a lot of the market, amongst others. Yet, PocketPC already has a Trojan Horse.
IMHO, it is just easier to hack a Microsoft system, because of poor design.

I gave this OS a try a little while back, but had problems running the system on my Latitude C600. Dont remember what version of the OS I tried. Its a good OS, and I had it running under VMware. It was a little slow in VMware for my taste, I'll give it a shot in a couple of days again I guess. Provided I have time.
