Smashing Windows
Somebody smashed my car window yesterday night. Nothing was stolen because there isn't anything in the car worth stealing. Wish the thief had realized that before smashing the window! Its an old beatup 1990 Accord. Anything worth stealing in the car has already been stolen!
Have to get a new Window (or patch it at least) before it starts raining!
*Sigh*
I'll do it after I'm done patching the servers. At least patching my servers does'nt cost me as much as it does to patch Windows! ;)

Radio Userland is also the software got me started with blogging/rss. The older version 7.x was the version I used for various tasks though I never bought the later version 8 which was Windows and Mac based only. I am a linux guy, so I had to use other software. But Dave Winer, and Radio Userland are what got me started with blogging, and this little piece of software I wrote, and RSS.

One reaction which is obvious in hindsight is the assumption in this post that Microsoft shouldn't abide the fact that Apple is dominating a market it isn't directly engaged in. This is such a natural way of thinking of for Microsoft people ("we should be number 1 in every software/hardware/technology related market") that it is often surprising for non-Microserfs when they first encounter the mentality.

Slashdot | Microsoft Acquires Spyware Removal Company:
"Looks like they are investigating how much, not if."
I was reading the comments of readers on this article and it struck me how short term people look at things. Its plain to me, that moving to the .net framework and integrating it more closely with the next release of Longhorn even more closely is an important goal for Microsoft. And this integration will rid Microsoft of one large security issue with its current code base, that is buffer overflows. Why do you think there was this whole issue of the next version of IE being limited to Longhorn. Why do you think that Microsoft is designing IE from the base up? Because they realize that the security model in their current implementation of IE sucks. They need to redesign it from the base up. And what the user base for Windows has shown is that they will moan and groan, but wont switch to a new platform.
The emphasis of Windows 3.1 was the move away from the command line to the GUI. The emphasis from Windows 95 was true multitasking and a refined interface. The emphasis of Windows 2000 was stability. The emphasis of Windows XP was better integration with Windows 95 apps and games, a better interface to compete with Mac OS X. The emphasis on Longhorn is going to be security. Why do you think they are cutting out features like WinFS. Because there are other more important things that the market demands. Thats the way a company works and keeps its shareholders satisfied. Moving to managed code is going to save Microsoft a lot in terms of security issues. Further I believe there is a lot of ActiveX stuff that is going to be changed so that it has a better security model. And the market will make a huge fuss and cry but still stick to Windows XP instead of moving to Linux or Mac.
Ofcourse this is all just my opinion.

If you ever get a bad interpreter error while trying to run a bash script it might be because someone edited it in windows. Running dos2unix on the file might solve the problem.
Ran into this problem today, when a coworker emailed me a bunch of scripts and they would not work. They worked fine on the coworkers machine. Apparently the email went through an exchange server, which worked its magic on the scripts, rendering them incomprehensible to bash. Running dos2unix fixed the problem.

Access Control: One can specify the level of access they want for their blog. You can choose to make a blog public, private or only accessible by people on your MSN Messenger Allow List. Your Allow List is a list of everyone who you've allowed to see your online presence and IM you via MSN Messenger. This should be everybody on your buddy list and everyone who's asked to put you on their buddy list and you've accepted. This allows you to create a blog that is only accessible by people in your immediate circle of friends and family which for most people are the only ones you want reading your blog or viewing your photos ."
I think these are the two most important features. The ease this provides will make them much more preferable to msn messenger bloggers. I'm not moving anytime soon though.

"A helicopter was flying around above Seattle when an electrical malfunction disabled all of the aircraft's electronic navigation and communications equipment.
Due to the clouds and haze, the pilot could not determine the helicopter's position. The pilot saw a tall building, flew toward it, circled, and held up a handwritten sign that said 'Where am I?' in large letters. People in the tall building quickly responded to the aircraft, drew a large sign, and held it in a building window. Their sign said 'You are in a Helicopter.'
The pilot smiled, waved, looked at his map, determined the course to steer to SEATAC airport, and landed safely. After they were on the ground, the copilot asked the pilot how he had done it.
'I knew it had to be the Microsoft Building, because they gave me a technically correct but completely useless answer.'"

Solaris Express -- Get the Software

Solaris 10 for the download! I wonder how good the hardware support is. One of the main reasons I dont have FreeBSD installed on my system is that I dont know if it will be able to run my wireless network card (Netgear WG511). There is pretty good support for the card in the Linux kernel right now. However, when I bought the card, around March or April of this year, support was available through third party drivers that you had to download, compile and install. It was a pain, and it took me a while. I probably will have to do the same with FreeBSD if there is a third party driver, and it will take me some time. I just dont have the time anymore. If the same is true for Solaris 10, well then I'm not installing. Its one thing to try and do it with Linux (I've been using it since 1997) but to do it on an alien OS, is something I dont have time for at the moment. I've installed Solaris 9 before, and I had problems. I'm expecting the same with 10.

I am a great Warcraft III fan, I love it. More than any of the other games I have tried. Maybe its the fact that there were 6 people at a time, dueling it out together. Or the fact, that if they could not get together, you could go to battle.net and duke it out their.
The only thing I am scared of is the addiction that comes with playing MMORPG's. I have examples of dozens of friends who have ruined their lives because of games. On the other hand, I dont have television. Now if I can only stop watching programs downloaded through Bittorrent, I might have MMORPGs as an alternative. Though it would be hard on my wallet.
There is another cool MMORPG I blogged about a bit earlier. Eve has cool graphics, and seems well recommended. Dont know how the game actually is though, and I guess unless you have an addicted friend you wont really be able to tell.
